Membership Value

CME:

SDAFP Provides a wide range of CME keeping up to date with the current needs of members. In the past we developed training for the FMCSA DOT Medical Examiner Training. The SDAFP presented the training session 4 times within our state and completed 2 out of state sessions updating hundreds of physicians, PA’s and NP’s on the 8 core curriculum set forth by the FMCSA allowing participants to sit for the test to be part of the National Registry. The SDAFP also shared the program with 12 other AAFP Chapters.
Our annual meeting is well attended typically around 100+ registered attendees and attracts nearly a third of our membership each year out in Deadwood, SD. The CME at this 2 1⁄2 day meeting is delivered by local and national speakers and usually provides at least 15-35 CME Credits.

Professional Development:

SDAFP has developed and delivered SAM Group Sessions since the opportunity was put forth by the ABFM in 2009. The ABFM has since changed to KSA Group Sessions; we have presented over 40 SAM/KSA Group Sessions and have helped 100’s of diplomats from SD and surrounding states to complete their Maintenance of Certification requirements for the ABFM.  We continue to update our offerings as the ABFM continues to produce new KSA offerings.
Part IV’s have been another part of MOC and Carletta has helped many people work through this process and she is available to answer any questions.

Social Media:

We try to keep our website up to date.  We do have a Facebook page however it does not get a lot of traffic.
Our newsletter the SDAFP News is produced and published twice a year with numerous blast emails to supplement throughout the year.

Advocacy:

For the last 15 years we have had representatives from our board of directors attend the Family Medicine Congressional Conference in Washington, DC. We have had direct contact with our representatives and their healthcare aides and have been able to bring our concerns to them in our nation’s capital! We will continue to send our leaders to speak on behalf of the SDAFP.  We have hosted advocacy day at our state legislature and have had good physician and representative participation. We have recently added Dan Heinemann, MD as the SDAFP Lobbyist.

Students:

We meet and provide lunch to the first year students each fall and share with them the benefits of being a student member of the SDAFP/AAFP. We also sponsor several FMIG activities throughout the year. We continue to co-sponsored a service learning project for approximately 71 first year medical students to the Pierre Indian Learning Center and the last several years the SD Women’s Prison. The students also have the opportunity to learn about advocacy by meeting with the Governor, the Lt. Governor,  the state epidemiologist and other state officials. They also observe and are recognized by both the House of Representatives and the Senate giving them the opportunity to understand the importance of state advocacy. We also provide funding for students to attend our annual meeting and the AAFP Student/Resident conference in Kansas City, MO.

Resident Members:

Each year we have had 100% resident membership in the SDAFP.  We have funding available for residents to attend the SDAFP Winter Seminar. In the past  we have provided the residency programs with the DOT Medical Examiner Training Materials so that they can provide training through their program.  For several years we have been asking the resident’s to provide KSA sessions in October to help them gain experience in teaching life long learning to their colleagues.  It will help us to establish a future base of physician leaders.  We also provide funding for residents to attend the AAFP Student/Resident conference in Kansas City, MO.

Retired Members:

Retired members enjoy the same benefits as Active Members. They are welcome to attend our CME conferences at N/C and are welcome guests at all receptions and special events at the WSS.  We welcome their participation in all SDAFP events.

Foundation:

The South Dakota Foundation for Family Medicine provides funding for several projects mostly regarding CME and Student/Resident activities.  They provide funding for the Waite Award and for two endowed lectures at our Winter Conference.  During COVID we did matching funds donation with our members and the SDAFP and gave a total of almost $10,000 to the Feeding South Dakota Mobile Food Pantry.
